A hands-on look at how papyrus paper and traditional perfume oils are made.
Papyrus was Egypt's great gift to writing itself — the word "paper" comes from it — and the plant nearly vanished before artisans revived the ancient pounding-and-pressing technique in the 20th century. Perfume, meanwhile, was serious business in pharaonic Egypt: priests blended scented oils for temple rituals and burial rites, a craft Cairo's perfumers still practice using the same base ingredients, like lotus and myrrh, sourced from the same land.
