Is a one-day Cairo trip from Sharm El Sheikh realistic?

It is possible, and a flight is what makes it possible. Sharm El Sheikh sits at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, and the pyramids stand on the Giza Plateau, about 8 miles (13 km) southwest of central Cairo according to Wikipedia.

Our Sharm El Sheikh to Cairo Pyramids Day Trip page lays the day out as follows. As read on October 24, 2026, the times are approximate, and the page says the route can change with traffic, weather and the day's plan.

StepTime on the trip pageLeg length on the trip page
Hotel pickup, car to Sharm airportabout 04:30–05:30about 30 minutes
Domestic flight to Cairo–about 1 hour
Cairo airport to the Giza Plateauabout 08:30 at Gizaabout 45 minutes
Giza to the museumabout 12:00 at the museumabout 10 minutes
Museum to Cairo airport–about 45 minutes
Flight back to Sharmabout 18:00about 1 hour
Sharm airport to your hoteleveningabout 30 minutes

Add the page's own leg lengths and you get about 4 hours 40 minutes in cars and on planes: 30 + 60 + 45 on the way out, 10 across Cairo, and 45 + 60 + 30 on the way back. That leaves out airport check-in, security and waiting, which the page does not time. About nine and a half hours separate the page's Giza time (08:30) from the flight home (18:00).

The page calls it a very long day, says flight schedules vary by season, and states that the trip does not include Saqqara or old Cairo. If you want the pyramids and one museum with the logistics handled, the format fits. If you want to walk the bazaars or stay for sunset, it does not.

How do the plane day trip, the overnight trip and the longer day compare?

We list three Sharm departures that reach Cairo. Everything in this table comes from the three live trip pages, checked on October 24, 2026.

The two-day trip runs on a different clock. Its page lists an overnight departure at 23:30, arrival in Cairo as the city wakes up (no time given), then a museum stop at 09:00 (listed as the Egyptian Museum on October 24, 2026), lunch at 11:30, the Citadel at 13:00, Khan el-Khalili at 16:00 and hotel check-in at 19:00. Day 2 starts at 08:00 on the Giza Plateau (about three hours), then lunch, Saqqara at 12:00 and the drive back at 14:00. The page gives no arrival time in Sharm.

The longer day is private and adds Saqqara's Step Pyramid and the ruins of Memphis, where its page lists a large statue of Ramses II and an alabaster sphinx. It gives no return time. For background on one stop, see our guide to Saqqara.

What does each trip include, and what do you pay for on the day?

The two-day page also excludes breakfast and dinner, and says the hotel name, category and room type are confirmed before the trip. Our tipping guide covers amounts.

The pages state no minimum age for any of the three. The day trip and the longer day carry a Family-Friendly tag but no age policy, and the two-day trip shows child prices for ages 2–11 with no rule for under 2.

What about going overland from Sharm to Cairo?

The overland route crosses Sinai and the Suez Canal. Wikipedia says the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel, 1.63 km (about 1 mile) long, carries two lanes under the canal and joins Sinai to the town of Suez. Wikipedia's Sharm El Sheikh article says frequent coach services run from the town's bus station to Cairo; it gives no timetable, and this guide does not recommend a carrier.

Egypt Independent reported on November 6, 2019 that a new road starting at the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel had been inaugurated and runs 342 km (about 212 miles) along the Gulf of Suez coast. That is a 2019 news report, not a current journey time, and the report gives no timetable for the drive from Cairo, so this guide gives no road travel time.

On our two-day trip, the road option means a pickup around 23:30, arrival in Cairo early the next day with no time given, and a drive back that leaves Saqqara at 14:00 on day two. Its FAQ suggests bringing a change of clothes for the night.

Which visa and documents do you need for Cairo from Sharm?

Visitors flying into Sharm El Sheikh can get a free Sinai-only entry stamp. As read on October 24, 2026 (the page shows no update date), the UK Foreign Office entry rules for British passport holders say the stamp applies to stays under 15 days at resorts in Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba, and that travel outside those resorts requires a visa, so the stamp does not cover Cairo.

The same page lists an e-visa applied for online (valid up to 3 months), a visa on arrival at approved airports for 30 US dollars in cash (valid up to 30 days) and, from August 1, 2026, a digital visa on arrival at Cairo International for 36 US dollars including a 6-dollar service fee, by card only. Other nationalities should check their own government's advice. The Foreign Office pages do not explain how a Sinai-stamp visitor gets a visa for a same-day Cairo trip, so settle the visa before the day. Our Egypt visa guide explains the options. Check the official page before you travel.

Also carry:

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months after arrival, with a blank page (Foreign Office).
  • The passport or a copy: the Foreign Office says police check ID regularly and you may be detained without ID and a visa, or a copy of them. Keep photocopies of the passport, visa and flight ticket apart from the originals.
  • Travel insurance covering local treatment and medical evacuation, as the Foreign Office advises.

Our Cairo airport arrival guide describes the terminals and passport control.

How hot is Cairo compared with Sharm El Sheikh?

The table sets average daily highs side by side, using the climate tables on Wikipedia. The Sharm figures cite the World Meteorological Organization and Climate-Data.org; the Cairo figures are 1991–2020 normals for Cairo International Airport. Values are rounded to whole degrees.

MonthSharm high, °F (°C)Cairo high, °F (°C)Cairo low, °F (°C)
January71 (22)66 (19)50 (10)
March77 (25)75 (24)56 (13)
May93 (34)90 (32)67 (19)
July100 (38)95 (35)75 (24)
September96 (35)92 (33)73 (23)
November81 (27)77 (25)60 (16)

Sharm's January average low is 56°F (13°C) against 50°F (10°C) in Cairo, so a winter morning at the Giza Plateau starts cooler than the one you left. Wikipedia describes Cairo's rainfall as light and limited to the cooler months.

What do the pyramids and museum cost to enter?

The trips cover the entrance fees, so this section shows what you are paying for. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities' Giza Plateau page lists foreign area entry at 700 EGP for an adult and 350 EGP for a student, with hours of 08:00–16:00 daily (checked October 24, 2026). It carries a 2019 copyright notice, so confirm at the gate. Other Ministry pages give different hours (7:00–17:00 for the Great Pyramid and Menkaure pages) and a different price for going inside the Great Pyramid, so sources differ; see our Giza tickets guide.

The area ticket does not cover the Great Pyramid, the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaure, the Tomb of Meresankh III or the Workers' Cemetery. Wikipedia says the Grand Egyptian Museum officially opened on November 1, 2025, and counts 5,398 Tutankhamun artifacts there. Its ticket prices change, so see our post on Grand Egyptian Museum ticket prices.

Which trip suits which traveler?

  • First-timers who want the pyramids and one museum: the day trip by plane. It has the shortest list of stops and includes the flights.
  • Travelers who want more than one day allows: the two-day trip, with the Citadel, Khan el-Khalili, Saqqara, a hotel night and lunch on both days. Our 7-day itinerary spends three days in Cairo and Giza, the first of them arrival and rest, so a one-day or two-day trip covers only part of the city.
  • Travelers who care more about the ancient sites than the museums: the longer day. It is private; its page does not say whether you fly or drive.
  • Families: the pages set no age limits, and the day-trip page calls the day very long, so read its timings against your children's usual day.

Cancellation is the same on all three pages: free up to 3 days (72 hours) before the scheduled start, matching our cancellation policy page (last updated August 30, 2026). A booking is a no-show, and non-refundable, if you miss the agreed pickup without notice. The policy page does not mention flights.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do Cairo in one day from Sharm El Sheikh?

Yes, by plane. Our day-trip page shows a hotel pickup around 04:30–05:30, a flight of about one hour, the Giza Plateau at about 08:30, a museum at about 12:00 and a flight back around 18:00. The page calls it a very long day, and flight schedules vary by season.

Do I need a visa for a day trip from Sharm to Cairo?

For British passport holders, the UK Foreign Office says the free Sinai-only stamp applies to stays at resorts in Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba, and that travel outside those resorts requires a visa. The stamp therefore does not cover Cairo. Check your own government's advice for your nationality.

Is a two-day trip better than a day trip?

It depends on what you want to see. Our two-day page adds the Citadel, Khan el-Khalili, Saqqara and a hotel night, and includes lunch on both days. The day trip by plane is shorter and includes the flights.

Can I travel from Sharm El Sheikh to Cairo by road?

Yes. Wikipedia mentions coach services from Sharm's bus station, and our two-day trip offers a road option with a pickup around 23:30. The UK Foreign Office advises against driving outside main cities and resorts at night, so weigh that before choosing a night departure.

What does the pyramids ticket cost for foreigners?

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities lists 700 EGP for a foreign adult and 350 EGP for a student for Giza Plateau entry, as checked on October 24, 2026. Going inside a pyramid costs extra. Our trip pages say whether entrance fees are included; only the two-day page lists the sites.
