Saqqara: Where the Pyramid Idea Was Actually Invented
2026-08-30
Saqqara, about 30 kilometers south of Cairo, is home to the Step Pyramid of Djoser — built around 2670 BCE, roughly a century before Giza's Great Pyramid, and considered the world's oldest large-scale cut-stone building. Before this, Egyptian royal tombs were flat mudbrick structures called mastabas; Djoser's architect, Imhotep, stacked six mastabas of decreasing size on top of each other, effectively inventing the pyramid form that would define Egyptian architecture for the next thousand years.
Imhotep himself is worth knowing — a commoner who rose to become high priest, architect and physician, later deified as a god of wisdom and medicine, one of very few non-royal ancient Egyptians ever granted that status. The surrounding funerary complex, largely restored, includes courtyards designed for the pharaoh's spirit to perform jubilee ceremonies in the afterlife.
Saqqara sees a fraction of Giza's crowds despite its historical significance, which makes it one of the better "second pyramid site" additions to a Cairo itinerary for visitors who want more space and fewer vendors. It's also still an active excavation site — new tomb discoveries at Saqqara make international news on a fairly regular basis, meaning what's on display can genuinely change between visits.
