The Great Pyramids: How Were They Actually Built?
2026-08-30
The Great Pyramid of Giza was built around 2560 BCE for Pharaoh Khufu, using an estimated 2.3 million limestone blocks, some weighing over 2 tons. It stood as the tallest man-made structure on Earth for almost 3,800 years — a record nothing else touched until the Lincoln Cathedral spire in the 1300s.
The honest engineering answer (not aliens): ramps, sledges, wetted sand to reduce friction, and an enormous, well-organized workforce. Archaeological finds — including workers' villages with bakeries, medical facilities, and payment records — show these were skilled paid laborers, not slaves, working in rotating crews during the Nile's flood season when farming paused.
What still genuinely impresses engineers today isn't the size — it's the precision. The base is level to within about 2 centimeters, and the sides align to true north within a fraction of a degree, achieved without modern surveying tools. Standing at the base, it's less "how" and more simply overwhelming in scale.
