Tutankhamun and the Secret of the Valley of the Kings
2026-08-30
Tutankhamun ruled for roughly 10 years and died around age 18–19 — by the numbers, a minor, unremarkable pharaoh. He's the most famous name in Egyptology today for one reason: when Howard Carter found his tomb in 1922, it was almost completely intact, unlike nearly every other royal tomb in the Valley of the Kings, which had been looted in antiquity.
The Valley of the Kings itself was chosen precisely to prevent this — a hidden desert valley on Luxor's West Bank, instead of visible pyramids that practically advertised their treasure. It didn't fully work; most tombs were robbed anyway, some within decades of burial. Tutankhamun's tomb survived mostly by accident — it was small, hastily built for his early death, and later buried under debris from another tomb's construction, hiding it from robbers for over 3,000 years.
The gold death mask and over 5,000 other objects found inside are now the core of the Egyptian Museum's collection (with the largest pieces moved to the new Grand Egyptian Museum). Visiting the actual tomb in the Valley of the Kings — his mummy still lies inside — is a genuinely different experience than seeing the objects in a museum case.
