Philae Temple: The Island Sanctuary Saved from the Nile

Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis, was originally built on Philae Island near Aswan starting around the 4th century BCE, and remained an active pilgrimage site into the Roman period — one of the last places in Egypt where the old religion was still openly practiced, closed by imperial decree only in 550 CE.
Like Abu Simbel, Philae faced destruction from modern dam construction — first partial submersion after the original Aswan Dam in 1902, then near-total loss after the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s. Between 1972 and 1980, UNESCO led another major relocation: the entire temple complex was dismantled into more than 40,000 blocks and reassembled on nearby Agilkia Island, which was reshaped to resemble the original Philae's contours so the temple would sit in a setting close to its original one.
Reaching it requires a short boat ride from the dock near the Aswan High Dam, which adds to the atmosphere rather than detracting from it — arriving by water, the way ancient pilgrims did, to a temple surrounded by the Nile. The evening Sound and Light Show here is considered one of Egypt's better ones, with the temple's reliefs and columns lit up against the dark water.
