Siwa Shali Fortress Night Photography Tour

This small photography walk is timed for moonrise, so you can photograph Shali's mudbrick towers under moonlight with a local guide who knows the best angles. The fortress was built on a hill in the thirteenth century by the Berber people of Siwa, with houses rising in storeys inside defensive walls to guard against raiders. Its walls are kershef, a local mix of salt and clay that dries hard and keeps out the desert heat, with palm trunks used for roofs and ceilings. After heavy rain damaged the village in the twentieth century, residents gradually moved to newer homes in the town below.
