About This Trip

Why This Matters
Despite its name, this column has nothing to do with Pompey—Egyptians erected it in 297 AD to honor Roman emperor Diocletian, who spared the city after crushing a revolt. It's the largest ancient monument still standing in Alexandria, carved from a single block of red Aswan granite, making it a rare survivor of a city that lost the Library, the Pharos, and most of its classical grandeur to earthquakes, fire, and time.
