About This Trip

Why This Matters
Ramses II built Abu Simbel not just as a temple but as a message — placed at Egypt's southern frontier, its four colossal statues were meant to awe anyone approaching from Nubia with the pharaoh's power. Twice a year, sunlight still pierces 60 meters into the mountain to illuminate his statue, a feat of ancient engineering. That UNESCO led a 1960s effort to cut the entire site into blocks and reassemble it higher up, ahead of the flooding, makes visiting it as much a tribute to modern ingenuity as to pharaonic ambition.
