Wadi El Gemal ('Valley of the Camels') is a national park just south of Marsa Alam covering a striking range of landscapes in one protected area — desert wadis, Egypt's largest mangrove forest, and offshore reef around Hamata and its islands.
A typical tour combines a 4x4 drive through the desert interior, a stop to see local Bedouin communities who still herd camels here, and a visit to the ruins of Roman-era emerald mines that once supplied gems across the ancient world. Some itineraries add time at the mangroves or a short boat stop, depending on the operator.
It's a good pick for a change of pace from beach and reef days, and one of the only places on this stretch of coast where you'll see genuine ancient history alongside the nature.
