Unfinished Obelisk Tour
From €17
In an ancient quarry on Aswan's outskirts lies a colossal granite obelisk, still attached to the bedrock, abandoned mid-carving after a crack appeared in the stone roughly 3,500 years ago. Had it been completed, it would have been the largest obelisk ever raised in Egypt — nearly 42 metres tall.
What makes this site so valuable is exactly what makes it unfinished: the surrounding rock still shows the tool marks, cutting channels and work platforms ancient masons used to extract and shape granite, giving visitors a rare, direct look at the physical process behind monuments seen finished everywhere else in Egypt.
A relatively quick, easy add-on to a Philae Temple or Nubian village visit — most tours combine the two.
