Marine life on the reefs and wrecks
Divers and snorkelers regularly meet clownfish, which are easy to spot by their bright orange bodies and white bands. Napoleon wrasse, eagle rays, green sea turtles and guitar sharks are also commonly seen.
Several shark species turn up often:

- grey reef sharks
- hammerheads
- oceanic whitetips
Wrecks pull in open-water animals such as dolphins, manta rays and turtles. At Ras Mohammed, visitors find parrotfish, blue-spotted stingrays and reef sharks. Spinner dolphins live permanently at Sataya Reef.
The Thistlegorm and diving qualifications
The Thistlegorm is the best-known wreck on this coast. Swimming through its cargo holds requires a PADI Wreck Specialty certificate or an equivalent one. The deeper sites in general are easier to reach for divers who have completed PADI certification before travelling.
When to visit
Conditions are favourable all year, because visibility and water temperature hold up through every season. No single month is the only workable one for diving or snorkeling. Liveaboard berths fill up in peak season, so those trips need to be booked well ahead.
