Most guidebooks will tell you 'visit Egypt in winter' and leave it at that. Here's the more useful version.
October to April is genuinely the most comfortable window for sightseeing — daytime temperatures in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan sit in a pleasant 20–28°C range, and evenings are cool enough for a light jacket. December and January are peak season: book accommodation and Nile cruises at least a month ahead.
May and September are solid shoulder-season picks if you want fewer crowds and don't mind warmer afternoons.
Summer (June–August) is genuinely hot in Upper Egypt — Luxor and Aswan regularly hit 40°C+. If you're set on a summer trip, the Red Sea coast (Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Marsa Alam) is a much better call than the Nile Valley, since sea breezes take the edge off and you'll spend most of your time in or near the water anyway.
