What Really Happened to the Library of Alexandria
2026-08-30
The ancient Library of Alexandria, founded around 285 BCE, aimed to collect a copy of every book in the known world — estimates of its holdings range from 40,000 to 400,000 scrolls, an almost unimaginable concentration of ancient knowledge in one building.
The popular story of "Julius Caesar burned it down in one fire in 48 BCE" is a real event, but not the whole story — that fire likely damaged warehouses near the harbor, not the main library itself, which continued operating for centuries afterward. The library's actual decline was gradual: reduced funding under later rulers, the loss of imperial patronage under Roman rule, and a slow scattering of scholars and texts over several centuries, with no single culprit or single dramatic ending — a less cinematic but more historically accurate story than the popular myth.
The nearby Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, stood for over 1,600 years before earthquakes finally destroyed it in the 14th century — parts of it were later reused to build the Citadel of Qaitbay, which still stands on roughly the same site today. Modern Alexandria's Bibliotheca Alexandrina, opened in 2002, is a deliberate architectural and cultural tribute to the original — worth visiting as a symbol of continuity, even though none of the ancient collection survives inside it.
