Karnak Temple: The Largest Religious Site Ever Built
2026-08-30
Karnak Temple in Luxor is the largest religious complex ever constructed anywhere in the world — roughly 100 hectares, large enough to contain about 10 average European cathedrals inside its boundaries. It wasn't built by one ruler at one time; over 30 pharaohs contributed to it across more than 2,000 years, each adding pylons, halls, obelisks or shrines, making it as much a layered timeline of ancient Egyptian history as a single monument.
The undisputed highlight is the Great Hypostyle Hall: 134 massive stone columns, the largest reaching 21 meters tall and wide enough that it would take several adults linking arms to circle one. Walking between them, with the tops of the columns once supporting a roof that's long gone, is one of the more physically overwhelming experiences at any ancient site in Egypt — photos consistently undersell the scale.
Practical tip: go early morning to beat both the heat and the crowds, and don't skip the Karnak Sound and Light Show in the evening if your schedule allows — seeing the pylons and the sacred lake lit up after dark, with the history narrated over speakers, is a genuinely different experience from the daytime visit, and works well as a second visit rather than a replacement for walking it in daylight.
